Shining at the Beijing Wind Energy Exhibition! How was this key wind turbine technology developed

On October 17, at the 2024 Beijing International Wind Energy Conference Innovation Theater, Ming Yang Smart Energy shared innovative solutions for multiple scenarios with the industry and society. Among them, typhoon resistance technology attracted the attention of many industry experts, media and audiences.

In September 2024, the super typhoon "Makar" hit Hainan, Guangdong and other places. More than 1,700 wind turbines of Mingyang faced strong winds, rainstorms and rough waves, withstood the test of the super typhoon, demonstrated excellent typhoon resistance performance, and were worthy of the title of "anti-typhoon expert".

Ten minutes on stage, ten years of hard work off stage, how is this real skill cultivated? Based on the experience advantage of more than 2,600 Mingyang typhoon-resistant units operating normally in strong typhoon seas, long-term online monitoring by high-precision sensor devices, the establishment of a massive measured database, and advanced prediction models, scientific design systems, precise typhoon-resistant strategies and refined typhoon-resistant management, Mingyang wind turbines have been implanted with typhoon-resistant "genes" since their birth, which not only reduces the uncertainty brought by typhoons, but also increases the certainty of unit design, and improves the power generation capacity of the entire wind farm, turning typhoons into opportunities.

Accurate typhoon prediction model driven by big data

The strong timeliness and high accuracy of typhoon forecasts are one of the prerequisites for typhoon-resistant wind turbines to have excellent typhoon resistance. Mingyang independently developed the technology based on embedded physical knowledge neural network (PINN), combining the physical laws of atmospheric motion with the neural network model to form a high-precision dynamic model of atmospheric motion during typhoons.

During the passage of Typhoon Makar, Mingyang Yangfeng Warning System predicted the typhoon's path and intensity changes in real time, and provided environmental parameters such as wind, waves, and currents to the operating units, ensuring their safe operation.

Scientific and reliable unit system design

Based on the test data correction of Mingyang’s 30 models, 40 typhoons and 100 wind farms, a fully coupled high-precision multi-body dynamics simulation and analysis platform was formed for the entire process of a typhoon passing through a wind farm. This continuously optimizes the structural performance of typhoon-resistant wind turbines, provides precise input for unit design, accurately simulates the load and dynamic response of wind turbines in each stage, and improves structural safety and typhoon resistance.

At the same time, relying on Mingyang's self-developed Matrix platform, the blades adopt a highly integrated, intelligent and refined design to reduce blade loads. The nacelle, fairing and related brackets adopt a design analysis method based on fluid-solid coupling to ensure the rationality and stability of the solution. At the same time, the unit adopts multiple redundant backup power lubrication systems, diesel generator backup power typhoon resistance systems, wind measurement system fusion technology, large yaw system and dual-drive variable pitch system to meet various extreme working conditions. Redundant design.

Systematic and precise anti-typhoon control strategy

The typhoon risk identification system independently developed by Mingyang contains a complete database of coastal wind farms. Based on massive data, it trains a large typhoon model, which can be refined to each unit in the wind farm, and targeted reinforcement or wind shutdown can be carried out to reduce the maximum limit load during the typhoon and improve the typhoon resistance of the unit. At the same time, the typhoon resistance control strategy of the farm group based on the typhoon wake is combined with the typhoon resistance prediction and the distribution of the whole field to avoid the occurrence of dangerous positions in the field and improve the reliability of the field group level typhoon resistance.

When the power grid is not out of power during a typhoon, the wind turbine adds a typhoon control strategy module, actively yaws when powered on, and the wind rotor tracks the main wind direction and other related strategies to keep the whole machine in the minimum load state as much as possible. When the typhoon causes the power grid to lose power, Mingyang customizes and develops a typhoon-resistant backup power supply system. The wind turbine is also equipped with a high-performance, large-capacity diesel generator. When the power grid loses power, the backup power supply system automatically starts to support the yaw of the wind turbine and monitor the power supply.

The system integrates Beidou satellite communication and navigation systems. Even if the wind farm suddenly loses power, the Beidou communication system can send diesel engine startup instructions and host action instructions to each wind turbine, and monitor the status of the wind turbine in real time. It can not only ensure the normal operation and self-maintenance of the wind turbine monitoring system, but also ensure that the wind turbine is yawed in real time to face the wind when facing a typhoon. Based on the above design, the wind turbine can be ensured to be safe and pass the typhoon period smoothly.

Under the impact of Typhoon "Makar", the units of Mingyang Yangjiang Qingzhou 4 project remotely started the diesel generator backup power supply through the Beidou satellite communication system within 2 minutes when the grid on the unit side lost power. Thanks to the integration of advanced typhoon resistance strategies and management mechanisms, the units were in a stable state, tracking wind direction changes throughout the process with a wind deviation of less than 6°, and key indicators such as idling speed and cabin vibration were far less than the limit design standards.

Wind speed, cabin vibration amplitude and speed change sequence

In view of the characteristics of typhoon wind resources, the Storm Algorithm is used to fully utilize the energy of the typhoon's entire life cycle while ensuring the safe operation of the unit. Based on the cabin wind speed, a machine learning prediction algorithm is used to predict ultra-short-term wind speed changes, and combined with the equivalent estimated wind speed of the unit's impeller surface, the current wind energy properties are accurately predicted. On this basis, the input effective wind speed is used to calculate the optimal set power and set speed points within the tolerable load envelope for power generation, thereby making better use of typhoon wind energy for more time and fully generating power generation benefits.

Refined typhoon prevention management mechanism and emergency plan

Mingyang formulates corresponding anti-typhoon strategies and plans for different typhoon stages, such as before the typhoon season, after the typhoon forms, and after the typhoon passes. Safety inspections and typhoon mode tests before the typhoon season arrive, and all-round emergency preparations are done to prepare for a rainy day. After the typhoon forms, an anti-typhoon emergency team is established to implement the "hourly work system" division of labor according to the anti-typhoon work mechanism to ensure the safety of wind farm units during the typhoon. After the typhoon passes, the units quickly resume normal operation, make full use of the typhoon, and increase power generation. For example, the Zhanjiang Xuwen Wind Farm, Mingyang Yangjiang Qingzhou Four Wind Farm, and Fengxian Wind Farm, which have just experienced the "baptism" of the typhoon, increased their power generation during the typhoon by about 1 times, 1.5 times, and 2 times respectively compared with the average daily power generation in the month before the typhoon.

Effective and reliable typhoon response strategies and management processes were also designed for installed but not operational units and equipment that had not been installed on site. When "Makar" passed through, in Lingao County, only about 15 kilometers away from Wenchang, where the typhoon landed, Mingyang's MySE18.X-20MW unit, the world's largest offshore wind turbine that had just been installed, was "safe and sound". The world's largest floating wind turbine "Mingyang Tiancheng" located in the Yangjiang waters of Guangdong also faced the test of the typhoon.

"Solid as a rock", best practices for wind power to resist typhoons:

The "Ming Yang Tiancheng" faced the test within the coverage of the 10-12 wind circle of Typhoon "Makar". The Mingyang Smart Energy Big Data Application System monitored and recorded the "Ming Yang Tiancheng" unit data in real time. The data showed that the maximum wind speed in the cabin exceeded 41.5/s, the significant wave height recorded by the acoustic wave meter reached 6.5 meters, the maximum wave height reached 9.8 meters, the cabin inclination angle changed from about 0 to 3 degrees, and the floating wind turbine as a whole showed good stability design performance and typhoon resistance.

Real-time wind speed monitoring data of the minimum system of "Mingyang Tiancheng"

After the passage of Typhoon Makar, a comparative analysis was conducted on the real-time monitoring data of Mingyang Tiancheng during the passage of Makar recorded by Mingyang Smart Energy Big Data Application System and the simulation data before the typhoon. The load of the whole machine was less than the design value. In the time domain, the amplitude of the floating body motion response was highly consistent with the measured data, and the draft values of the upwind and downwind buoys were highly consistent. In the frequency domain, there was no obvious characteristic period between the whole machine motion response period and the measured value, and there was no abnormal resonance point in the whole machine system. There was no obvious change in the platform posture and draft before and after the typhoon, and the ballast system of the unit operated smoothly. In terms of anchoring, the calculation results showed that the mooring system structure was safe.

Mingyang, Yangjiang, Qingzhou and Sihai wind farms “turn crisis into opportunity”

Mingyang Yangjiang Qingzhou Sihai Wind Farm is located on the route of Typhoon Makar. The total installed capacity of the project is 500MW. The 43 Mingyang wind turbines have successfully withstood the impact of the super typhoon and demonstrated excellent typhoon resistance. According to statistics, the power generation during the typhoon was 4.18 million kWh/day (4179913), which is nearly 1.5 times the average daily power generation of 1.7 million kWh in the month before the typhoon. The power generation from 0:00 on September 5 to 9:00 on September 7 exceeded 10.88 million kWh.

Zhanjiang Xuwen North Sea Wind Farm "Challenges the Limit"

In Zhanjiang, Guangdong, which is closer to Hainan, the 47 Mingyang typhoon-resistant offshore wind turbines (MySE6.45-180) at Xuwen North Offshore Wind Farm face a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 76m/s. At the same time, through the priority typhoon prediction model, typhoon management mode and storm algorithm control technology, the typhoon was fully utilized, and the power generation during the period was 970,000 kWh/day, nearly doubling the average daily power generation of 520,000 kWh in the month before the typhoon.

Shanghai Fengxian Wind Farm "follows the trend"

In Shanghai, the 16 Mingyang MySE6.45-180 units 1 of Fengxian Wind Farm successfully withstood the impact of the ultra-clear typhoon "Bebejia", and the maximum wind speed measured by the unit anemometer reached 57.4m/s. According to statistics, the power generation during the typhoon was 1.36 million kWh/day, which was nearly 2 times the average daily power generation of 460,000 kWh in the month before the typhoon.

After 17 years of fighting against typhoons, Mingyang Smart Energy has independently overcome many world-class challenges of offshore wind power in typhoon areas, and has achieved global leadership in typhoon-resistant wind power technology, becoming the company with the most actual operating data of typhoon wind farms in the industry, and the "No. 1 brand" in typhoon-resistant wind turbines. So far, more than 2,600 Mingyang wind turbines have been operating in typhoon areas, and these wind turbines have experienced dozens of typhoons of different levels, with the maximum typhoon level reaching level 18.
